Co2 - Performance Ladder

Background CO2 Performance Ladder

The CO2 Performance Ladder was developed to encourage companies to reduce CO2 emissions. This instrument ensures that companies provide insight into their own CO2 emissions and also aims to look for opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions within their own business operations and within the chain.

The CO2 Performance Ladder is owned and managed by the Foundation for Climate Friendly Procurement and Business (in Dutch: SKAO). See also our organization page on the SKAO website:

The start to Co2 reduction

In 2017, Group De Cloedt started with the CO2-Aware certificate level 3 of the CO2-Performance Ladder. Reducing our CO2 emissions is very important to our organization; it contributes to our social responsibility for good climate control and also ensures further optimization of our business operations through a reduction in fuel consumption, because our CO2 emissions are more than 95% related to the fuel consumption of our ships (scope1).

As DC Dredging, we are transparent in our measures to promote CO2 reduction, so that everyone can take note of our progress. Our measures and objectives are therefore aimed at improving the efficiency of the fleet in order to reduce this consumption.

Energy program Co2 performance ladder

An Energy management program has been developed to ensure that the requirements of the CO2 performance ladder are met in a structured manner within our organization. This program describes the contours of our energy policy and describes the framework in which we arrived at our actions and measures.

Insight and Co2 reduction

In order to determine where a reduction of CO2 emissions is possible, it is important to first gain insight into the current situation where and to what extent the emissions take place within the company. Within our organization we have set up an energy management program for this. This program describes the contours of our energy policy and describes the framework within which and how we arrived at our actions and measures.

Every year we draw up an energy policy memorandum in which we achieve our objectives and ambitions. An update is published semi-annually. Our carbon footprint is included in these reports. In order to achieve our energy reduction targets, we are continuously looking for opportunities to improve the efficiency and deployment of our fleet. Participating in various initiatives to reduce energy consumption contributes to achieving our objectives. For example, we are currently experimenting with fuel additives to reduce consumption.

Transparency and participation

DC Dredging regularly communicates about the progress of CO2 reduction, both internally and externally.
In this way we keep external parties informed and we keep all employees involved.
We encourage people to work together to reduce our CO2 emissions. We therefore regularly communicate the fuel consumption of the ships per month in the fleet in order to stimulate awareness of the reduction of consumption per ship. Ultimately, this automatically results in a reduction of CO2 emissions.

We also actively participate in consultation groups within the sector, for example the management participates in a number of initiatives from the sector. For example, we became a member of the Netherlands CO2 neutral foundation and participate in the "law" working group with this foundation, which deals with CO2 problems in shipping. We are also a member of the Association of Hydraulic Engineers and the Dutch Association of Building Materials Suppliers (NVLB), which are actively involved in this subject. In addition, we are investigating an initiative to allow our employees to purchase solar cells at a discount through the employer, comparable to the former "bicycle plan".
